Styling for Engagement Photos
So you have scheduled engagement photos in Charleston, SC but don’t know what to wear. Well you’re in the right place, I’ve been photographing engagements for 16 years in Charleston, SC, and have picked up some style points along the way.
Let’s start off with the basics of having you look and feel your best. This is a great opportunity to have your hair and makeup trial for your wedding day. With all of the closeups of that fabulous engagement ring on your hand, it’s also an excellent time for you to get your nails done. Side note, this is not a good time for a spray tan I promise.
Definitely, bring two outfits with you. Most clients bring a casual outfit and then a dressier one ( you can never be too dressed up in my mind). Save your favorite outfit for the end when you are feeling most comfortable in front of the camera. I always bring a pop-up tent for outfit changes in case we are in the middle of downtown and need it.
One outfit must for ladies is a flowy dress or long skirt. I love the movement in the photos of having my clients swish their dresses. Bonus when you hold your arms away from your body they immediately look more toned. For male clients, I love the layered look. Therefore, a jacket, vest or coat over a dress shirt is ideal.
Color-wise, I’m in love with lighter tones and muted neutrals. I’m a big fan of pastels like blush pink and sky blue. In fact, I feel both men & women can never go wrong with blues. If you are thinking of a floral print, smaller photographs are better than bigger ones.
Lastly, I say bring something unique to you to your session. I love accessories and props- bowties, statement jewelry, balloons, champagne, and a bouquet of flowers are just a few examples.
Please know it’s more than okay to feel nervous! I do not expect you to be models. My job is to direct you in a way that helps you relax, feel natural, and be your true comfortable selves in front of my lens. Your only job is to be yourself, laugh a lot, and let me create photos you’ll love forever.
